Girls
Inc.® Operation SMART, one of our hallmark programs, is organized
around a philosophy or set of characteristics: equity, exploration,
empowerment, and fun.
Hands-on activities give girls the opportunity to explore, ask questions,
and solve problems.
In hundreds of sites across the country, close to half a million girls
have started on the path to becoming engineers, auto mechanics, microsurgeons,
and astronauts. They’re asking questions, making guesses, taking
chances.

Organizational Support:
- Assistance with recruitment and promotion
of program
- Ongoing professional support to site contact

Staffing:
- 1 paid group facilitator trained in best practices
for girl focused programming

Target
population:
Girls ages 8-18 living in Multnomah, Washington, or Clackamas counties

Operation SMART sites include:
Arleta Elementary, Beach Elementary, Peninsula Elementary, James
John Elementary, Markham Elementary, Rigler Elementary, Beaumont Middle
School, Fernwood Middle School, HB Lee Middle School and Kellogg Middle
School.
Program structure:
Bi-weekly, 1.5 hours per session, for 16 weeks after school at sites
listed above- times vary by location.
Objectives:
- Increase techniques of inquiry, guessing, predicting and risk-taking
- Expose girls to various examples of math, science and technology
Program Components:
Bi-Weekly, after school sessions using evidence-based curricula. Program
content is delivered through games, experiments and occasional fieldtrips.
Each program will culminate in a showcase at the school, where their
activities are spotlighted.
Each program consists of four modules each lasting
two weeks:
- Eco Girls (ecology/environmental science)
- Galaxy Girls (astronomy/space/physics)
- Material Girls (civil engineering/architecture)
- N.E.T. Girls (eutritional engineering and technology)
